These reactions are exothermic, meaning they produce heat.

If a reactant or product is a solid (s), liquid (aq), or gas (g) place the representative shortened state after it.

Reactivity Series of Metals

Synthesis Reactions Two or more elements or compounds may combine to form a more complex compound.

Basic form: A + X AX Examples A chemical equation is symbolic representation of a chemical reaction with a reactant entities are given on the left hand side and the product entities on the right hand side.

Rules to Writing Equations Write down the formula(s) for any substance entering into the reaction.

Following our previous work on introducing a database of tested chemical examples from that can be used as a repository for problem set development in green chemistry courses, in this paper we extend this idea to include over 1300 examples taken from covering 36 volumes. Examples are sorted according to the following 13 categories: asymmetric syntheses, syntheses involving catalyst preparation, chemoenzymatic reactions, classical resolutions, convergent synthesis plans, kinetic resolutions; multicomponent reactions, multistep linear synthesis plans, natural feedstocks as starting materials, reactions involving product distributions, reactions involving sacrificial reagents, reactions involving nonunity stoichiometric coefficients, and polymerization reactions. In this paper, we highlight the skill of balancing chemical equations as a mandatory prerequisite of green metrics analysis. Through a problem set containing 70 exercises, we selected challenging examples from to emphasize this point and link it to the understanding of reaction mechanisms. A number of these examples also contain errors or missing information that students are asked to correct. This is yet another good training ground to exercise their skills in problem solving.

Chemical Equations Continued 3 The diatomic elements when they stand alone are always written : H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2.
The sign -> means "yields" and shows the direction of the action.
A small delta above the arrow, shows that heat has been added.
A double arrow shows that the reaction is reversible and can go both directions.

Place a plus (+) sign between the formulas as needed and put the yield arrow after the last one.

Examine the formulas carefully and decide which of the four types of equations applies to the reaction you are considering.

Synthesis:

A synthesis reaction is when two or more simple compounds combine to form a more complicated one.

To balance, you follow these steps:
Count how many magnesium we have (one on each side)
Count how many oxygen we have (one on reactants and two on products)
After dealing with these steps you add the amount needed for it to be balanced.

Mg + OO MgO
After adding a 2 to the products, magnesium is not balanced.
