To realize this we need to embark on an large-scale international research endeavour bringing together Europe’s best scientist. For this, we have launched the Photosynthesis 2.0 Programme, an initiative which already is supported by 51 universities, research institutes and international initiatives from 17 EU-Member States and beyond.

Scientists from Wageningen University & Research Led by and , have found . As a result it should be possible to breed crops that use photosynthesis more effectively in the future, increasing their yield and enabling them to capture more CO2 from the air in the soil.

Over one billion years ago the eukaryotic plant cell originated from the endosymbiosis of an early eukaryotic cell and a photosynthesizing...

Both types of photosystem come together in green plants, algae and cyanobacteria to perform a particularly complex form of photosynthesis—oxygenic photosynthesis—that produces energy (in the form of ATP and carbohydrates) as well as oxygen, a byproduct toxic to many cells. The remaining photosynthetic organisms, all of which are bacteria, use only one type of reaction center or the other.

At first, most scientists did not believe that all the reaction centers found in photosynthetic organisms today could possibly have a single common ancestor. True, all reaction centers harvest energy from light and lock it into compounds in a form that’s chemically useful to cells. To do this, the proteins pass electrons along a transfer chain of molecules in a membrane, as though skipping along a series of stepping stones. Each step releases energy that’s ultimately used down the line to make energy-carrier molecules for the cell.

A precise 3D scanner has been added to the MAXI Version of the IMAGING-PAM. The novel setup integrates analysis of photosynthesis and morphology on a three dimensional level and thus enables a new way of multifactorial plant phenotyping.

My students and I conduct field and laboratory studies on the ecology and physiology of vertebrates, primarily lizards and snakes. Some projects include monitoring rattlesnake dens in Kittitas County, garter snake physiology, and snake thermoregulation. Students can also participate each winter quarter/spring break in a broader array of field research projects in the Sonoran desert and tropical dry forest biomes of Arizona and Mexico (through BIOL/GEOL 377).

Energy - Royal Society of Chemistry

For eons, plants have used "chloroplast" power stations to create energy from water, carbon dioxide, and light. Comparatively, scientists—including researchers at Brookhaven Lab—only began realizing the components for artificial photosynthetic systems in recent decades. And their efforts become more crucial as worldwide energy demands increase year after year.

There have been significant recent advances in the development of organic synthetic methodology that make use of photo-activation of substrates for directed synthesis. Several important developments in this area have been pioneered by synthetic organic chemistry groups at Boston University (particularly the Porco group). Our group works to develop theoretical models and to study the mechanism underlying this important new excited state synthetic methodology. In particular, we developed a new genetic programming approach capable of fitting highly accurate and flexible reactive empirical valence bond (EVB) potential models using very limited ab initio single point energy data on these very large complex organic systems. This approach has been shown to be accurate and reliable, especially for treating solvent interaction effects on spectral line shapes. A cartesian reaction plane model for use in quantum dynamics calculations employing our PLDM propagation schemes has also been developed for analyzing high resolution matrix isolation spectra. Finally, our work extends new theoretical techniques like the string method for obtaining minimum energy paths on complex, high dimensional ab initio potential energy surfaces and the temperature accelerated molecular dynamics (TAMD) approach to map out the free energy surface and explore most probably reaction channels in condensed phase excited state reactive systems.

My research bridges ecology, evolution, and genetics to examine mechanisms of plant adaptation in natural environments. In particular, I address fundamental evolutionary ecology and applied questions to investigate the genetic basis of weediness and invasiveness in plants. Possible projects include examining hybridization between cultivated and wild plant species, investigating genetic variation for drought tolerance in desert plants, and genetic mapping of adaptive traits in Arabidopsis. Summer opportunities of sampling plants in the field may be available. In addition to my own work, I am open to working with students with broad interests in plant adaptation and/or weedy and invasive species.

My current work involves characterization of vegetation community changes that occur after fire. I hope to link these changes to factors such as fire intensity, frequency, and season of disturbance. Opportunities include becoming involved in the seed identification, or participation in a small greenhouse study this fall, in conjunction with this study. Summer opportunities may exist for field vegetation sampling for students who have a suitable coursework background (General Ecology and Plant Taxonomy). In addition to my own research topics I will consider working with students interested in diverse topics from rare plant communities to community dynamics of weed species.
