The evolution of photosynthetic organisms began approximately 2.5 billion years ago when cyanobacteria came into existence and first used water molecules for photosynthesis, releasing oxygen as a by-product and changing life forms on earth. After an endosymbiosis event involving a eukaryote and a cyanobacterium, red algae, green algae and glaucophytes diverged from its common ancestor, a eukaryotic photosynthetic organism. In this long process, various metabolic interactions in cells have changed dramatically. For example, when cyanobacteria, which had performed both photosynthesis and respiration until then, evolved into chloroplast, mitochondria became responsible for respiration. Yet, there was a lack of information of these aspects in glaucophytes which needed to be addressed in order to understand the diversity of photosynthetic regulation and metabolic interaction among primary symbiotic algae.

Figuring out the "whodunnit" in the oxygenation of Earth's atmosphere 2.4 billion years ago was relatively easy. Scientists know of only one process that could produce such large amounts of oxygen: photosynthesis. At the time that the planet was oxygenated, Earth was populated exclusively by single-celled organisms (Archaea and Bacteria), and only one of these can perform the sort of photosynthesis that splits a water molecule and results in oxygen gas: Cyanobacteria, whose blue-green color comes from chlorophyll. Today, Cyanobacteria can be found almost everywhere on Earth — likely right outside your door in the soil — and still play an important role in producing the oxygen that we breathe.

In this process of"natural selection," the colony soon consists only of individual bacteriaadapted to the new conditions. If a hot summer follows, then the process of naturalselection will favor those that survived the harsh winter but still have some heattolerance.
