Recently, there is more reason to doubt whether the main premise--disorderincreases fear, crime, and deterioration--is correct after all. Taylor (1999)reports on a study that followed conditions in thirty neighborhoods inBaltimore in 1981, 1982, and 1994. By 1994, physical conditions had worsenedsignificantly, yet there were few changes between 1981 and 1994 in citizens'fear of crime or perception of disorder, amount of crime, or neighborhooddecline. Although the research teams expected something else, residents did notreport more incivilities, they were no more fearful, increased disorder did notalter or increase crime, and neighborhoods did not experience structuraldecline (Taylor 1999). The study warned against community policing andprosecution efforts that concentrate heavily on or fixing physical problems--the premise of thesemethods has been exaggerated, they have been overused, and they haveovershadowed other problem-solving and community-oriented strategies.

In this example where two choices are presented as the only options, yet the author ignores a range of choices in between such as developing cleaner technology, car sharing systems for necessities and emergencies, or better community planning to discourage daily driving.

The intense tie is not to the theology but in the emotional commitment to others in their small group. Most of these people are seeking meaning in their lives but they are also seeking friends. The small groups spend two hours a week together – doing the volleyball or the mountain biking and praying; they become your closest friends. These churches form in places of high mobility – people live there for six weeks and the church provides the community connection. When you lose your job, they’ll tide you over, when your wife gets ill, they’ll bring the chicken soup. (quoted in Bunting 2007)

In this example the conclusion that Bush is a "good communicator" and the evidence used to prove it "he speaks effectively" are basically the same idea. Specific evidence such as using everyday language, breaking down complex problems, or illustrating his points with humorous stories would be needed to prove either half of the sentence.

Diversity does produce ‘bad race relations’ or ethnically-defined group hostility, our findings suggest. Rather, inhabitants of diverse communities tend to withdraw from collective life, to distrust their neighbours, regardless of the colour of their skin, to withdraw even from close friends, to expect the worst from their community and its leaders, to volunteer less, give less to charity and work on community projects less often, to register to vote less, to agitate for social reform , but have less faith that they can actually make a difference, and to huddle unhappily in front of the television. Note that this pattern encompasses attitudes and behavior, bridging and bonding social capital, public and private connections. Diversity, at least in the short run, seems to bring out the turtle in all of us. (Putnam 2007)

First, from the material marshalled by Robert Putnam we can see that the simple act of joining and being regularly involved in organized groups has a very significant impact on individual health and well-being. Working so that people may join groups – whether they are organized around enthusiasms and interests, social activity, or economic and political aims – can make a considerable contribution in itself. Encouraging the development of can also make a significant difference to the experience of being in different communities. Here we might highlight the case of schooling. Educational achievement is likely to rise significantly, and the quality of day-to-day interaction is likely to be enhanced by a much greater emphasis on the cultivation of extra-curricula activity involving groups and teams.

However, generational change came out as a very significant factor. A “long civic generation,” born in the first third of the twentieth century, is now passing from the American scene. ‘Their children and grandchildren (baby boomers and Generation X-ers) are much less engaged in most forms of community life. For example, the growth in volunteering over the last ten years is due almost entirely to increased volunteering by retirees from the long civic generation’ (). The book also explores the consequences of a decline in social capital (and the benefits enjoyed by those communities with a substantial stock of it), and what can be done (see the discussion elsewhere on social capital).

Decline of the English Murder by Kayla Su on Prezi

This effort, which we described as a “Grand Design” for Europe, caused considerable resentment on the continent where it was looked upon as a wrecking tactic. When it broke down we formed Efta, but that was no adequate solution, political or economic. By 1960 the British government was seeking was of bringing about a close association with the Six and we then made our application to join the community, mainly for political—and as so often in postwar British foreign policy, for contradictory political—reasons. We were worried that instability in France and Germany might cause the community to disintegrate; we were also concerned that if the community prospered and achieved the promised cohesion it would become something from which we would not want to be excluded, particularly as the United States would be inclined to regard it as a main partner in Europe. When, after de Gaulle's vetoes and further knocking at the door we were eventually admitted to the community, our policy towards it did not smack of wholehearted commitment even after the overwhelming referendum.

In the mid-1950s we refused to participate in the creation of a European Defence Community, a decision that was largely responsible for its still-birth, and that led as a compensation to the formation of the West European Union with the heavy obligation to maintain a specific number of British troops in Germany. It should be emphasised here that this despatch does not attempt to deal with the defence aspects of our policy. We have certainly benefited militarily from close collaboration with the United States; and notwithstanding our economic weakness we have continued to play a highly important defence role in western Europe, the political implications of which cannot be overestimated.
