Twelve hypothyroid subjects, 13 healthy and 12 healthy women with a slight deficiency of vitamin D were studied to distinguish seasonal changes from the thyroxine-dependent ones. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels of hypothyroid patients were lower than those of healthy individuals when the sera were obtained in the autumn. In hypothyroid patients a single oral dose of 100,000 IU vitamin D3 resulted in a smaller increase in 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration than in controls having subclinical exogenous vitamin D deficiency. Substitution therapy with thyroid hormone, started in our study always in autumn, increased the 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in hypothyroid patients, which was opposite to the autumn-to-spring variation of this hormone observed in healthy controls. The increase of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulphate values following substitution therapy in the hypothyroid patients may indicate that thyroid hormone(s) is (are) involved in the regulation of steroid hormone synthesis.

The radiotracer uptake is increased whenever the thyroid is under increased stimulus, e.g., a raised serum TSH, stimulating antibody of Graves' disease, or when the thyroid becomes autonomous ("hot" nodule or toxic multinodular goiter). A decreased uptake occurs when there is little or no thyroid stimulus (e.g. decreased TSH in hypopituitarism, or exogenous thyroid hormone administration), when thyroid cells are damaged so that the uptake mechanism is defective (e.g. subacute thyroiditis, chronic destructive Hashimoto's thyroiditis), or when excess iodine "swamps" the radioactive tracer. . The appearance of the thyroid scan and uptake for the most common causes of thyrotoxicosis can be found in Table 3 of the lecture Hyperthyroidism. Nuclear thyroid imaging is also used occasionally to determine whether a thyroid nodule is functional or not.. Nodules that concentrate radioactivity are called functioning and may be "warm" (same activity as the adjacent thyroid tissue) or "hot" (all activity is located in the nodule = hyperfunctioning). The nonfunctioning nodules are called "cool" or "cold", depending on the concentration of activity within the nodule as compared to the rest of the thyroid. The scan cannot determine if the nodule is malignant as most (>95%) thyroid nodules are "cool" or "cold". The vast majority (>90%) of "cool" or "cold" nodules are not cancer (see lecture on ).

There is increasing evidence that thyroid hormones influence reproduction in vertebrates. However, little information is available on the mechanisms by which this happens. As a first step in determining these mechanisms, we test the hypothesis that the estrogen receptor subtypes (ERα, ERβ-1, and ERβ-2) are regulated by the thyroid hormone, (T3), in the gonads of goldfish. All three subtypes were down-regulated by T3 in the testis or ovary. We also found evidence that T3 decreased pituitary gonadotropin expression and decreased transcript for gonadal aromatase. Collectively, it appears that T3 acts to diminish estrogen signaling by (1) decreasing pituitary LH expression and thus steroidogenesis, (2) down-regulating gonadal aromatase expression and thus decreasing estrogen synthesis from androgens, and (3) decreasing sensitivity to estrogen by down-regulating the ER subtypes. Goldfish are seasonal breeders, spawning once a year, and thus have two distinct periods of growth: somatic and reproductive. Circulating thyroid hormone levels have been found to increase just after spawning. Therefore, we propose that this may be an endocrine mechanism that goldfish use to switch their energy expenditure from reproductive to growth efforts in the goldfish. Mol. Reprod.
