Photosynthesis in Elodea - YouTube

We had learned from the experiment that an Elodea plant in water and pH of 11 solution will grow the fastest under the same conditions of a plant in a pH of 7 and 3.

Elodea is a genus of 6 species of aquatic plants often called the waterweeds ..

This can be seen on the graph
as the highest point this is where the Elodea is photosynthesizing at
a high rate and it starts to slowly drop as the distance is
increasing.

For those needing a bit more economy, but cannot afford a well made/longlife HO LED such as the GroBeam or AI Hydra, instead of the shotgun emitter, low quality daisy chain drivers of Fluval, Current Satellite, or Finnex LEDs, a consideration would be the relatively new SHO (Super High Output) compact fluorescent lamps (CFL).
These use 65, 85, & 105 watts, however these awesome bulbs put out the equivalent of 325, 425 and 525 watts respectively! (Pictured to the left and below in a photo-shop example of placement.)

Honestly, for any aquarium plant keeper who is remotely handy in DIY projects, the , especially for tanks over 50 gallons. Many in the green house industry have already discovered this lamp for its plant growing capabilities, which for the price there is simply no equal for planted aquariums!
The aquarium hobby/industry is much slower to adopt many technologies and this light is a major example of this. Without question, this is the lamp that could or should be used by any serious planted freshwater aquarium keeper.

1. Obtain a green sprig of Elodea. Remove several leaves from around the cut end
of the stem. Slice off a portion of the stem at an angle and lightly
crush the cut end of the stem.
2. Place a small pinch of sodium bicarbonate into a test tube (this increases carbon
dioxide in the water).
3. Place the plant into the test tube, stem end up.
4. Filled the test with distilled water so that the stem is completely submersed.

What's in a name? Plenty. In the case of discussingthe plants here, the name"anacharis" used to be a valid genus name for some of theseplants; and is a moniker still often used. The correct name for most species of "anacharis"is ("Ell-oh-dee-ah"). is anotherrecent (1961) erected genus for a similar plant (the one of mostinterest to aquarists) that produces 2 to 4 flowers ( only1), that have large and deeply white petals (versus small andcolorless), and are pollinated by insects (elodeas is done viawater).

Prepare a graph of the collected data and analyze it.

Materials Needed:

(For each group of four students)

elodea (water plant) lamp (40 watt)
test tube razor blade (single-edge)
dechlorinated water (room temperature) tape
sodium bicarbonate powder (baking soda) clock or timer
metal stand with rod or test tube rack metric ruler

OVERVIEW:

This article is intended to take the novice through the basics of plant keeping and get them ready for advanced techniques. It will include several outside references for more in depth information (such as lighting, see below) that I strongly recommend reading, particularly as you require more advanced plant keeping methods.

"Clarity is pleasurable", and it's abouttime we had some good feelings and cleared up a/the "anacharisquestion". How many types of this plant are there? Why does it nowand then live like a champ and other times just fall apart? Are thereanacharis, elodea and Egeria, or are they all the same?

Observe evidence of photosynthesis in a water plant

Variables

Input - Light intensityis to be varied by increasing and decreasing
the distance from the light source to the plant

Output - The rate of photosynthesisis to be measured by counting the
bubbles of oxygen produced by the plant every two minutes, and
therefore finding the rate of photosynthesis

Control - The amount of water available to the Elodea will stay the
same level in the 400 cm3 beaker.
