Synthetic Estrogen Incurin Gets FDA Approval

Estradiol and estriol are typically used in gels to treat vaginal dryness in post menopausal women. As far as their success with dry, wrinkled skin is concerned there is one much-quoted study from the University of Vienna Medical School, Austria. The trial was conducted with 0.01% estradiol or 0.3% estriol on 59 postmenopausal women. After six months of treatment, a marked improvement in skin elasticity and firmness was noted; wrinkle depth and pore size decreased by over 60% in both estradiol and estriol groups. Skin moisture and collagen synthesis increased significantly.

Estriol is produced from estrone in a multi-step synthesis

The effects of estriol on serum prolactin (PRL) and LH levels, on the pituitary response to TRH and LHRH and on the synthesis and release of PRL from the anterior pituitary gland were investigated in female rats. The increase of serum PRL levels after estradiol administration was found to be associated with an increase of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and GABA-transaminase (GABA-T) in the hypothalamus. Thus, a study was carried out on the effects of estradiol and estriol on PRL secretion and on GAD, GABA-T and gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) in the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary. Under basal and TRH-stimulated conditions, estriol increased serum PRL levels, decreased basal serum LH levels, and increased the response to LHRH, in terms of LH release. Estradiol and estriol increased the synthesis and release of 3H-PRL from hemipituitary glands in incubations of pretreated animals. Both estrogens induced hyperprolactinemia, concomitantly with an increase of hypothalamic GAD and GABA-T activity. Estriol increased hypothalamic GABA concentration, but did not modify GABA concentration in the pituitary glands. Our results show that estriol, at relatively high doses, seems to be active in increasing PRL synthesis and release and in decreasing serum LH levels; it can also modify pituitary response to TRH and LHRH stimulation.

estriol synthesis then is either low or absent.

The primary molecule that begins the synthesis of estrogen is cholesterol

Phytoestrogens are another option. They tend to appear in anti-aging creams as plant derivatives such as black cohosh or isoflavonoids derived from soy. It turns out that may not even be a phytoestrogen. , on the other hand, are a class of estrogen-like compounds, specifically genistein and daidzein. There are a few studies that suggest that soy is promising. In 2004, European found that soy extract resulted in increased collagen and HA synthesis and “appears to rejuvenate the structure of mature skin”.

The Human placenta produces and from circulating .Pregnenolone is converted in the fetal adrenal gland into (DHEA), aC19 steroid, then subsequently sulfonated to . DHEAS is converted to in the fetal liver. In theplacenta, 16-OH DHEAS is converted to estriol, and is thepredominant site of estriol synthesis.

If we look at the body closely we find that all tissue; hair, skin, mucous membraines/vaginal tissue, subcutaneous fat and even the brain tissue is adversely affected by excess synthetic estrogens found in our environment.

Bioidentical progesterone with phytoestrogens will reduce the symptoms and discomfort of menopause, perimenopause and premenstrual syndrome without the side effects associated with synthetic hormone replacement therapy.

Timing might be a factor. In one study, using Premarin cream, researchers observed a trend, although not statistically significant, of improvement in the skin of women who were less than 24 months postmenopausal. Two other studies concluded that the use of topical estrogens, such as Premarin cream or topical estradiol gel, could decrease fine wrinkling, improve roughness of the skin and stimulate collagen synthesis. Yet another found local that estriol, when applied to abdominal skin for three weeks, thickened fibers in the papillary dermis of patients.
