*It is recorded that an Adam de Newmarch married Cecily de Neville, and her lands at Redburne in Lincolnshire were escheated by the Crown after his death, when she appealed for them to be returned to her in 1290-91. Michael Stanhope suggests this was Adam son of John, which sounds very probable, because we know that his lands were escheated as a punishment for taking part in the barons’ revolt in the 1260s. However, Pedigrees From The Plea Rolls, Yorkshire Feet of Fines and other records indicate that Baron Adam’s wife was named Joan and that she outlived him. Obviously, one man cannot have been survived by two widows, so there is confusion about whom Cecily’s husband was that we have not been able to reconcile.
The Darcys were very highly connected: John Darcy was the son of John Darcy and his first wife, Emmeline, dau. of Sir Walter Heron of Silkston and Alice de Hastings. His second wife was Joan, widow of Thomas FitzJohn, Earl of Kildare, dau. of Richard de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, and his cousin Margaret de Burgh, by whom he had Elizabeth, born April 3, 1332, at Platten, County Meath, Ireland, whose maternal grandparents were Richard de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, and Margaret de Burgh, daughter of Sir John de Burgh and Cecily de Balliol. She m. 1. James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormond.
