This sort of thing in Kant is the origin of the practice in and other Idealists of the "dialectical" progression from thesis, to antithesis, to synthesis.
For example, Kant illustrates the cosmological idea with "antinomies" -- thesis/antithesis pairs that both appear to be true, eg "There are in the world causes through freedom" and "There is no freedom, but all is Nature." Kant claims the split between
Kant's antithesis of dogmatism and criticism
The resolution to these antinomies here consists in giving each sideits due, but simultaneously limiting the domain over which the claimshold. The thesis demand for an absolute causal beginning or anecessary being might well be allowed to stand, but certainly not as“part of” or as an explication of appearances innature. Similarly, the antithesis conclusions can stand, but only inrelation to objects in nature, considered as appearances. Here, theconflict seems irresolvable only on the assumption that appearancesare things in themselves. If appearances were things in themselves, for example, then it would certainly seem true that either they areone and all subject to mechanistic causality, or not. In such a case,it makes sense both to argue for a non-temporal beginning and to denysuch a beginning. Left unresolved, then, this antinomy leaves us witthe following dilemma: on the assumption of transcendental realism, both nature and freedom seem to be undermined. To avoid this, Kantappeals to transcendental idealism, which is supposed to rescue reasonfrom the conflict. Given transcendental idealism (with its distinctionbetween appearances and things in themselves) it remains possible thatin addition to the mechanism of nature, or contingent existence, thereis an intelligible causal power, or a necessary being.
Since Kant had thought that speculative Reason would often produce , where the arguments were just as good for a "thesis" and a contradictory "antithesis," the notion was already current before Hegel, in Fichte, that the antinomies could perhaps be overcome through a "synthesis" (another Kantian term) that would somehow transcend the contradiction.

Adopting the empiricist approach is no more rewarding, in the finalanalysis; although the antithesis positions remain securely lodgedwithin “nature's own resources,” they can never measure upto the demands of reason's ideas. Worse, the antithesis arguments, inrefusing to go beyond the spatio-temporal realm, end up being just asdogmatic as their opposites, for the assumption is that whatever holdswithin space and time also holds generally. To assume this is to takewhat are for Kant merely subjective features of our intuition (formsof sensibility, space and time) to be universal ontological conditionsholding of everything whatsoever. Such a strategy is “toosmall” for reason which, even despite the limits of our ownhuman sensibility, is defined by its capacity to think beyond allstandards of sense and by its demand for more thoroughexplanation.
How does Kant demonstrate this? Both the thesis and antithesisarguments are apagogic, i.e., that they constitute indirect proofs. Anindirect proof establishes its conclusion by showing the impossibilityof its opposite. Thus, for example, we may want to know, as in thefirst antinomy, whether the world is finite or infinite. We can seekto show that it is finite by demonstrating the impossibility of itsinfinitude. Alternatively, we may demonstrate the infinitude of theworld by showing that it is impossible that it is finite. This isexactly what the thesis and antithesis arguments purport to do,respectively. The same strategy is deployed in the second antinomy, where the proponent of the thesis position argues for the necessity ofsome ultimately simple substance by showing the impossibility ofinfinite divisibility of substance, etc.
