Plant Energy Transformations-Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is an artifact of Energy Transfer
Big Ideas 1, 2, 4: Studying Photosynthesis and Respiration can be difficult for many students, but being able to see the process with Vernier Probes will help you understand these scientific processes. Evolution might seem far away from this discussion; however, C4 and CAM plants represent structural and biochemical adaptations for photosynthesis in hot and dry climate and Cytochrome C variation can be used to construct models of evolutionary relationships. The theme of energy transformation is obvious as plants transform light energy into chemical energy. We will spend time discussing the structure of the mitochondrion and the chloroplast because their function is closely related. At the metabolic level, photosynthesis and cellular respiration are mutually symbiotic which shows the theme of interdependence in nature.
A molecular assembly based on derivatized polystyrene is described, which mimics both the light-harvesting and energy-conversion steps of photosynthesis. The system is unique in that the two key parts of a photosynthetic system are incorporated in a functional assembly constructed from polypyridine complexes of Ru11. This system is truly artificial, as none of the components used in construction of the assembly are present in a natural photosynthetic system. Quantitative evaluation of the energy and electron transfer dynamics after transient irradiation by visible light offers important insights into the mechanisms of energy transport and electron transfer that lead to photosynthetic light-to-chemical energy conversion.
Energy transfer in photosynthesis - ScienceDirect
At first, most scientists did not believe that all the reaction centers found in photosynthetic organisms today could possibly have a single common ancestor. True, all reaction centers harvest energy from light and lock it into compounds in a form that’s chemically useful to cells. To do this, the proteins pass electrons along a transfer chain of molecules in a membrane, as though skipping along a series of stepping stones. Each step releases energy that’s ultimately used down the line to make energy-carrier molecules for the cell.
Respiration consists of a complicated series of chemical reactions. In the first stage, glucose is oxidized, and the chemical potential energy of its bonds is transferred to the chemical potential bonds of an ATP molecule. The ATP molecule can then be transported throughout the cell where its stored energy is used to complete various tasks within the cell. This process releases carbon dioxide gas and water.

One reason for that conclusion involves greasy molecules called quinones, which help transfer electrons in photosynthetic reaction centers. Every reaction center studied so far uses bound quinones as intermediates at some point in the electron transfer process. In photosystem I, the quinones on both sides are tightly bound; in photosystem II, they are tightly bound on one side, but loosely bound on the other. But that’s not the case in the heliobacterium reaction center: Redding, Fromme and Gisriel did not find permanently bound quinones among the electron transfer chain’s stepping stones at all. That most likely means its quinones, although still involved in receiving electrons, are mobile and able to diffuse through the membrane. The system might send electrons to them when another, more energetically efficient molecule isn’t available.
a. Using Excel, construct and label a graph showing the results for the three samples.
b. Identify and explain the control or controls for this experiment.
c. The differences in the curves of the graphed data indicate that there were differences in the number of electrons produced in the three samples during the experiment. Discuss how electrons are generated in photosynthesis and why the three samples gave different transmittance results.

is the chemical process by which green plants convert sunlight into sugar. In essence, this process transforms a wave of light energy into chemical potential energy, which the plant then stores in the molecular bonds of sugar molecules.
Chlorophyll Organization And Energy Transfer In Photosynthesis
When a herbivorous animal feeds on plant, energy is transferred from plants to this herbivore; and when a carnivorous animal feeds on this herbivore, the same is transferred on to it.
An Overview of Energy Transduction: Photosynthesis …
Different types of energy can be transferred from one type to another. Energy transfer diagrams show each type of energy, whether it is stored or not, and the processes taking place as it is transferred. Sankey diagrams also show the relative amounts of each type of energy.
PLANT ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS 2
Sankey diagrams summarise all the energy transfers taking place in a process. The thicker the line or arrow, the greater the amount of energy involved. The Sankey diagram for an electric lamp below shows that most of the electrical energy is transferred as heat rather than light.

Electron transfer is an important part of many natural processes, including the light harvesting process by which plants create and store energy through photosynthesis.
