Identification is the first step in managing aquatic weeds.
Submerged pond weeds may grow to the surface and affect the use of the pond.
Chemicals used in aquatic weed control are classified as herbicides.
First of all optimum water chemistry is important to control both types of algae.A fully pond with ammonia and nitrites at 0, nitrates under 50 ppm, and phosphates near 0.
A pH between 7.0 and 8.0 is important and even more important is a . This will in aid in maintaining a healthy & .
Good circulation and are also essential (please see my full pond article for more about this: ).
I would also like to note that I do NOT recommend the use of chemical pond algae killers as these often can exasperate the problem in two ways. One is that these chemical do not remove algae, they kill it where it falls to the bottom and adds to decaying organic mulm that then adds more nitrates and nitric acid to your pond which in turn spurs the growth of even more algae. The other problem is related and that is as the dead algae decays it depletes oxygen which can be deadly to the fish and spur the growth of toxic . The nitric acid production can also lead to dangerous pH crashes if the is not maintained.
& word equation for photosynthesis is stated below:
Carbon dioxide + water -----------------> Glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H20 -----------------> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Light in photosynthesis
Photosynthesis cannot take place without light, as light is one of the
factors by which the green plant photosynthesises (makes its own food
source) Light provides the plant with energy to make the chlorophyll
which in turn absorbs the light.
DUNN'S POND PACK (SUBMERGED WEED CONTROL)
From this it can be said that the
more light a plant is provided with (the more of a limiting factor is
takes in) then the higher the rate at which the pond weed, or any
plant, will give off a product of photosynthesis i.e.
Proper identification of aquatic weeds is of primary importance to their control. Aquatic plants that cause weed problems are divided into four groups: algae, floating weeds, emergent weeds (foliage above water) and submerged weeds (majority of foliage below water).

Algae are the most common group of weeds in South Carolina ponds. Their shape and size vary from microscopic single- or multiple-celled plants to branched plants that resemble submerged aquatic weeds. Unlike other aquatic plants, algae do not produce flowers or seeds. Algae are divided into three groups: plankton algae, filamentous algae (pond moss) and the stoneworts (colonial algae which resemble higher vascular plants).
Oxygen is naturally added to aquatic ecosystems by aquatic plants and algae through the process of photosynthesis; and by diffusion at the water’s surface and atmosphere interface. Animal, plant and bacteria respiration deplete oxygen. Adding oxygen to your pond, lake, canal, marina or reservoir water with bottom diffused aeration can help reduce the nutrients that promote algae growth by speeding up the breakdown of organic matter at the bottom, reducing the nutrient rich muck buildup. Removing 'stratification' through aeration also balances the pH levels and ensures that fish and other organisms have the oxygen they need at all levels throughout the year.

I am trying to find out if the distance of the pond-weed from a lamp will change the rate of photosynthesis.

Hypothesis: The rate of photosynthesis in the water plant hydrilla will change as the rate of carbon dioxide changes.

I am using pondweed because of its unusual quality of giving off bubbles of gas from a cut end, when placed in water.
Algae and Aquatic Weed Identification Guide
All living organisms need food. They need it as a source of raw materials to build new cells and tissues as they grow.
Plants are unique organisms since they are able to make their own food by using a chemical contained in their leaves called chlorophyll to absorb sunlight and transform it into chemical energy. This chemical energy is used to transform carbon dioxide and water into glucose (food) and oxygen. This process is called photosynthesis.
When leaves carry out photosynthesis they give off oxygen that passes to the atmosphere. If water plants are placed in sunlight you can collect the oxygen produced.

Preventative Methods: Prevention is the most important course of action in aquatic weed control. Preventing the establishment and growth of unwanted aquatic vegetation requires a combination of proper pond location and design, regular pond care and maintenance, and avoidance of intentional or accidental weed introductions. It is easier and less costly to prevent weed problems than it is to control them once they develop. Careful pond site selection and proper pond construction practices are the first steps in preventing aquatic weed problems. Most aquatic weeds and algae usually begin growing in shallow water (less than two feet). Edges of new and existing ponds should be deepened so shallow water areas are minimized. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service provides technical assistance for pond construction and renovation.

Fertilization: One goal of fertilization is to reduce light penetration through the water column. Nutrients released from fertilizer stimulate the growth of planktonic algae, thereby increasing the turbidity (cloudiness) of the water and decreasing light penetration. Pond fertilization can be an effective way to suppress the growth of filamentous algae and submerged macrophytes, which are rooted in the pond bottom and are dependent on sunlight for survival and growth. A fertilization program can also enhance fish production in ponds. However, fertilization must be done correctly and must be continued once it is started. A common mistake is to fertilize once or twice and then stop. This results in the loss of the plankton bloom within a few weeks. The planktonic algae settles out, and the water column once again becomes clear. Filamentous algae and other weeds then grow rapidly as they absorb the nutrients that are released at the bottom of the pond by the decomposing plankton.

I will measure the rate of photosynthesis by counting the number of bubbles that are released by the stem of the pond-weed when the lamp is shone on it from different distances.
