This resource was created by Lisa Nichols (chemistry faculty at Butte Community College in Northern California) as a result of an academic sabbatical leave in the Fall-2015 to Spring 2016 term. The target audience are undergraduate students in organic chemistry. In this resource you will find theory and procedures on the main organic lab techniques (chromatography, crystallization, extraction, distillation) as well as general concepts on how to set up and heat apparatuses (see the Table of Contents tab for a more complete listing of topics). All procedures are accompanied by step-by-step pictures, and graphics are heavily utilized throughout the resource.
I found the book was organized in a logical fashion. Simple concepts such as laboratory terminology for pieces of equipment and simple techniques are handled at the beginning. Then the manual moves to more advanced topics that may require understanding of the previously covered topics. Any time a new term is introduced it is defined and explained. Many visual aids such as pictures, figures, schematics and tables accompany the text. These items are appropriately enumerated and the text often refers back to these items so that its easy to visualize and follow what the text is describing.
In Organic Chemistry, the following laboratory courses are offered:
Chapters are devoted that discuss the techniques of organic synthesis; apparatus and terminology used in the description of synthetic procedures; the scope and mechanism of chemical reactions; and technical procedures on how to perform chemical experiments.
The text will be of vital importance to advanced undergraduate student or beginning graduate student of chemistry.
(Conjoined with Chem 152.) A survey of reactions of particular utility in the organic laboratory. Emphasis is on methods of preparation of carbon-carbon bonds and oxidation reduction sequences. For Chem 252, students would be required to complete an additional paper and/or exam beyond that expected of students enrolled in Chem 152. Prerequisites: Chem 140C or 140CH (152), or graduate standing (252).

(Conjoined with Chem 156.) Introduction to the measurement and theoretical correlation of the physical properties of organic molecules. Topics covered include molecular geometry, molecular-orbital theory, orbital hybridization, aromaticity, chemical reactivity, stereochemistry, infrared and electronic spectra, photochemistry, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Chem 256 students will be required to complete an additional paper and/or exam beyond that expected of students in Chem 156. Prerequisites: Chem 140C or 140CH (156), or graduate standing (256).
For instance, if the target compound was the base in the system, the extraction with HCl should be performed first. Whatever remains in the organic layer is not of interest anymore afterwards, unless one of the other compounds has to be isolated from this layer as well. If the target compound was an acid, the extraction with NaOH should be performed first. This strategy saves steps, resources and time, and most of all, greatly reduces waste.
Practical Aspects of an Extraction
An extraction can be carried out in macro-scale or in micro-scale. In macro-scale, usually a separatory funnel (on details how to use it see end of this chapter) is used. Micro-scale extractions can be performed in a conical vial or a centrifuge tube depending on the quantities. Below are several problems that have been frequently encountered by students in the lab:

At the undergraduate level organic laboratory techniques and glassware have not changed dramatically over the past couple of decades and I do not foresee much of a change in the next decade and beyond. This manual thoroughly describes the most important techniques and equipment. These will be useful in many years to come. Scaling a material down to nanometer-size reveals several opportunities to increase physical properties compared to bulk material or even create new ones. When quantum effects come into play electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability and chemical reactivity change as a function of particle size. Our approach uses carbon nanotubes (CNT) as a reaction container for the synthesis of intermetallic nanoparticles. With the given diameter of the tube particle size becomes adjustable. Furthermore the presence of the CNT-surrounding eases the reduction to metallic particle and protects nanoparticles from chemical influences (e.g. oxidation). Depending on the used material one obtains single particles or nano wires inside the inner cavity of the CNT. CNT have been filled for example with elements of main group IV in their metallic state. 3 different procedures to post synthetically fill the inner cavity of the CNT were used and by variation of the reaction parameters the appearance of filling particles, degree of filling and the purity of the samples in terms of coating to filling particle ratio can be tailored. These filled CNT with high rates of filling are promising for sensoric and energy storage applications.
