What are the limitations of technological determinism …
The power that we acquire from technology is quite big. In today’s society, technology has developed to a great extent and it is our belief that the extent to which it can go is quite unimaginable. It is developed at a very fast rate than before. Through definition, technology has been there in the human society even as it started. Saying that technology has always been there in the society can be in the form of electronics or otherwise (Agarwal and Lucas 2005, 385; Klein, 2002, 38). Question arises if technology is powerful that would enable it to control the society or if the society is the driving force behind the society. This is the basis for this debate. Personally, I think that that these two theories are relevant for the times they were brought to existence, I may not agree with everything that is brought forth for one theory. They both certain levels of acceptance.

I am reading The Net Delusion (one of the consequences of the PHD is that I feel obliged to read the book rather than the reviews of the book – will post more when I finish it!) and one of Morozov’s points is that the fact that we are using technologies that we don’t understand and that we ascribe qualities of openness to the internet that are overstated. True openness depends on strong privacy and net neutrality and these issues are not being discussed by mainstream media or politics both of whom are seduced by the idea of connecting people together. The point here is that behaviours are changing without direct reference to the technologies which are bringing about the conditions for change – and this speaks of a bigger shift than the cause and effect of technological determinism.

Limitations of technological determinism as a theory …
Hegel's idealism has fared poorly at the hands of later thinkers. Marx reversed the priority of the real and the ideal completely, relegating the entire realm of consciousness - religion, art, culture, philosophy itself - to a "superstructure" that was determined entirely by the prevailing material mode of production. Yet another unfortunate legacy of Marxism is our tendency to retreat into materialist or utilitarian explanations of political or historical phenomena, and our disinclination to believe in the autonomous power of ideas. A recent example of this is Paul Kennedy's hugely successful , which ascribes the decline of great powers to simple economic overextension. Obviously, this is true on some level: an empire whose economy is barely above the level of subsistence cannot bankrupt its treasury indefinitely. But whether a highly productive modern industrial society chooses to spend 3 or 7 percent of its GNP on defense rather than consumption is entirely a matter of that society's political priorities, which are in turn determined in the realm of consciousness.

The Tone of Technological Determinism - December
Our attitudes to privacy form a major part of our identity – what we choose to reveal to others and what we choose to reveal selectively has an impact in a world where we increasingly write ourselves into being. Openness is about more than data.
Mark Zuckerberg believes that privacy is no longer considered a social norm and he runs Facebook on that principle – something it is important to keep in mind every time they do a system update or release a new piece of functionality. Democracy done the Facebook way would mean that your views, your networks and your affiliations are public knowledge – as they are right now if you are not vigilant about your privacy settings. The data is there for people to see and use and as Morozov points out this is true for oppressive regimes as well as Western liberals. Our views on privacy are evolving alongside the technology. Danah Boyd talks about this in terms of a shift in where we are private as much as what we are private about but there is no doubt that our views are changing.
