The paper notes that although Smith wrote about economics, Locke about politics, Wollstonecraft about feminism, and Kant about morality, they all used reason as the foundation for their thought.

Critical Philosophy: Immanuel Kant and the Critique of Pure Reason

Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophy centers around the notion of the good will.

The final condition of self-consciousness that Kant adds to thepreceding conditions is that our understanding must cooperate withsensibility to construct one, unbounded, and unified space-time towhich all of our representations may be related.

No matter how many laps on the track of metaphysics Kant takes us through, he is still widely held as one of the greatest modern philosophers of our time....

Based on Kant’s theory, I have found suicide morally unjust.

Kant believes the good will is the faculty of acting according to a conception of law.

Since Kant's thought is truly the of modern philosophy, and still the fruitful point of departure for the 21st century, no such monument could be more suggestive, encouraging, and hopeful.

The passage between A106 and A111 is blindingly difficult. It takesup transcendental apperception, the unity and identity of the mind, andthe mind's consciousness of itself as the subject of all itsrepresentations (A106–108). I think that this passage introduces eithera new stage or even a new starting point for TD. Here many commentators(Strawson, Henrich, Guyer) would think immediately ofself-consciousness. Kant did use consciousness of self as a startingpoint for deductions, at B130 in the B-edition for example. But that isnot what appears here, not in the initial paragraphs anyway.

Even though Kant was critical of formal religion, he still admired the conduct of Pietists.

Kant, Immanuel: Fundamental Principles

Throughout his moral works, Kant returns time and again to thequestion of the method moral philosophy should employ when pursuingthese aims. A basic theme of these discussions is that the fundamentalphilosophical issues of morality must be addressed a priori, that is, without drawing on observations of human beings and theirbehavior. Kant’s insistence on an a priori method toseek out and establish fundamental moral principles, however, does notalways appear to be matched by his own practice. The Metaphysicsof Morals, for instance, is meant to be based on apriori rational principles, but many of the specific duties thatKant describes, along with some of the arguments he gives in supportof them, rely on general facts about human beings and ourcircumstances that are known from experience.

In Kant’s eyes, reason is directly correlated with morals and ideals.

Immanuel Kant was born in the year 1724 in Konigsberg in a lower middle class family. The parents’ upbringing of him made him consider them with a feeling of greatest appreciation of which he acknowledged that they gave him the best moral education. His fundamental skills of reading and writing were acquired at Konigsberg suburbs’ Hospital school. He went to Collegium Fridericianum Grammar school where he compulsorily learnt Latin and theology which seemed repressive to him. At 16 he was admitted at the University of Konigsberg where he came across to the philosophy of Leibniz. The year 1755 saw him graduate as a university teacher based on his thesis on “New light on the first principles of Metaphysical cognition.” In 1770 he was fully absorbed as a professor of Logic and Metaphysics making him among the prominent German language intellectual (Palmquist, 12-68).

One of them is Kant’s categorical imperative.

From this chain of reasoning about our ordinary moral concepts, Kant derived as a preliminary statement of moral obligation the notion thatright actions are those that practical reason would will as universal law.
