Crude oil is produced by earth itself. Fossil fuels is a misnomer, in my personal opinion. I do not personally believe in crude oils from algae or dinosaurs. Crude oil can be found in comets, as an example. There are vast interstellar clouds of this stuff. Hydrogen and Carbon do combine to form complex organic molecules that we call crude oil under pressure. This then seeps up. I believe there was a major upwelling of such seepage during the carboniferous period, bringing huge amounts of hydrocarbons to the surface creating a boom in life.
