First, below is my original master’s thesis schedule (yes, it’s simplified). I wasn’t entirely sure how much I’d have to read, due to not having a topic at all. . .but I estimated. Remember, the schedule can change as you learn more, but just having one is hugely helpful on its own. I did know it would be highly quantitative, thus the dataset/graphs. My original plan would take a year from when I started, but would ultimately mean going into a ninth semester, which would have been very expensive. So my goal was to cut total time in half.

Stage 3- Conducting the Research

The structure is very similar to that of a thesis or a scientific paper.

To build your sense of appropriate paragraph length, use the Internet to find examples of the following items. Copy them into a file, identify your sources, and present them to your instructor with your annotations, or notes.

He explores both the patterns ofprose, from the large-scale design of completed text to the specificstructures of component phrases and sentences, and the psychologicaland technical problems the writer encounters in prose composition.

Stage 5- Sharing the Research Outcomes with Others

17. The major myth in writing a dissertation is that you start writingat Chapter One and then finish your writing at Chapter Five. This is seldomthe case. The most productive approach in writing the dissertation is tobegin writing those parts of the dissertation that you aremost comfortable with. Then move about in your writing by completing varioussections as you think of them. At some point you will be able to spreadout in front of you all of the sections that you have written. You willbe able to sequence them in the best order and then see what is missingand should be added to the dissertation. This way seems to make sense andbuilds on those aspects of your study that are of most interest to you at any particulartime. Go with what interests you, start your writing there, and then keep building!

Another important datapoint: 2-3 conference, or 1-2 journal papers inrespectable (ACM, IEEE, IOP like) places are good enough for chapters4,5,6, and therefore the core of a PhD - testing by publication is aVERY good defense (or defence).

The following is Mariah’s thesis statement.

Now we are finally ready to look over Mariah’s shoulder as she begins to write her essay about digital technology and the confusing choices that consumers face. As she does, you should have in front of you your outline, with its thesis statement and topic sentences, and the notes you wrote earlier in this lesson on your purpose and audience. Reviewing these will put both you and Mariah in the proper mind-set to start.

I care much more about the content and structure (story).

The method chapter should not iterate the contents of methodology handbooks. For example, if you have carried out interviews, you do not need to list all the different types of research interview. You also do not need to describe the differences between quantitative and qualitative methods, or list all different kinds of validity and reliability.

How should it be written?Your thesis is a research report.

In a scholarly research article, the section dealing with method is very important. The same applies to an empirical thesis. For students, this can be a difficult section to write, especially since its purpose may not always be clear.

Make it as good as you can in that time, and then hand it in!

How much time and space should you devote to the theory chapter? This is a difficult question. Some theses dwell too long on theory and never get to the main point: the analysis and discussion. But it is also important to have read enough theory to know what to look for when collecting data. The nature of your research should decide: Some studies do not require much theory, but put more emphasis on the method, while other studies need a rich theory section to enable an interesting discussion.

Spend some time with them and, when you do, have a good time.

Mariah chose to begin by writing a quick introduction based on her thesis statement. She knew that she would want to improve her introduction significantly when she revised. Right now, she just wanted to give herself a starting point. You will read her introduction again in when she revises it.
