Metathesis reactions can occur between two when one product is in water, driving the reaction forward. For example, the precipitation of from a mixture of and sodium chloride causes to be left in solution:
Only the unsubstituted bonds are ring-opened (it is very difficult to metathesize or ROMP tri- and tetrasubstituted olefins). The polymers produced in the ROMP reaction typically have a very narrow range of molecular weights, something that is very difficult to achieve by standard polymerization methods such as free radical polymerization.
Olefin Metathesis Grubbs Reaction
A series of experiments for undergraduate laboratory courses (e.g., inorganic, organometallic or advanced organic) have been developed. These experiments focus on understanding the design and catalytic activity of ruthenium–indenylidene complexes for olefin metathesis. Included in the experiments are the syntheses of two ruthenium–indenylidene complexes that can be conveniently prepared from commercially available starting materials. The two complexes differ only by the nature of the phosphine ligand, yet each complex displays drastically different catalytic activity in a ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction. When the triphenylphosphine-containing complex is utilized, little or no catalytic activity is observed. Substitution of the complex with tricyclohexylphosphine, however, results in a complex with excellent catalytic activity in a RCM reaction. These experiments demonstrate the importance of catalyst design and expose students to the important field of olefin metathesis. Students also utilize several analytical methods (1H and 31P NMR, GC–MS, FT-IR) in characterizing the complexes and quantifying catalytic activity.
It would take all day to go into all the details (that we know so far) about the olefin metathesis reaction mechanism. There have been a number of intense experimental and computational studies on various catalyst systems, and there’s still more work to be done to figure it all out. But the basics are widely accepted and relatively simple to understand.
Properties Of Inorganic Compounds And Metathesis Reactions
Below is a catalytic cycle for the self-metathesis of propene to give 2-butene and ethylene. The starting point for the catalytic cycle is metal carbene I. This reacts with propene to give metallacyclobutane intermediate II. This four-membered ring then fragments in the opposite direction to release ethylene and create a new metal carbene III, which reacts with another equivalent of propene. Fragmentation of the resulting metallacyclobutane IV produces 2-butene and regenerates the initial metal carbene which re-enters the catalytic cycle.
Metathesis is a molecular process involving the exchange of between the two reacting , which results in the creation of products with similar or identical bonding affiliations. This is represented by the general reaction scheme:

The formation of an insoluble that bubbles out of the solution, or a compound such as , also drives the reaction to completion. Therefore, a (or general knowledge of solubility rules) can be used to predict whether two aqueous solutions will react. can also be used to predict the products of a metathesis reaction.

A subcategory of aqueous metathesis reactions is the reaction of an acid with a carbonate or bicarbonate. Such a reaction always yields carbonic acid as a product, which spontaneously decomposes into and . The release of carbon dioxide gas from the reaction mixture drives the reaction to completion. For example, a common, science-fair "volcano" reaction involves the reaction of with :

The principle of olefin metathesis is that an alkene double bond is and redistributed alongside the redistribution of an under the presence of catalytic metals, such as , , or . It has several commercially significant applications, and it is especially useful due to the relatively small amounts of side products and waste products.

Ring formation occurs when a diene is used as the starting material. Any size ring is possible to make with metathesis of a diene. For example, in the presence of a metal catalyst, usually , 4-methyl-1,7-octadiene forms 4-methylcyclohexene. When using terminal alkenes the by-product is always gaseous ethene.
