An efficient domino reaction has been developed for the synthesis of thiochromenes through Cu-catalyzed in situ incorporation of sulfur. This domino method avoids the use of less accessible and unpleasant arenethiols as starting materials, instead utilizes very stable aryl halides along with potassium ethyl xanthate as an odorless sulfur surrogate. The domino methodology proceeds through C(aryl)-S coupling, thioester cleavage, sulfa-Michael addition, aldol reaction, and elimination reaction sequences to provide thiochromenes in good yields

Shigeru Yamago received his B.S. and Ph.D in chemistry from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1986 and 1991, respectively, under the supervision of Professor Eiichi Nakamura. During that time, he joined Professor Peter Vollhardt’s group at U.C. Berkeley as a summer student (1988). He became an assistant professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1991 in the group of Professor Eiichi Nakamura and then moved to Kyoto University in 1995 in the group of Professor Jun-ichi Yoshida. He was a Visiting Scientist in Dr. Chryssostomos Chatgilialoglu’s group at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Bologna (2000). In 2003, he was appointed Professor of Osaka City University. He had been a Research Fellow of PRESTO program in the Japan Science and Technology Agency from 2002 to 2006. In 2006, he joined Institute for Chemical Research at Kyoto University where he holds Professorship. He received the Incentive Award in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan, in 2001. His research interests include synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, radical chemistry, and element chemistry.

The main difficulty with the modification of cellulose is its insolubility. Cellulose contains too many hydroxyl groups to be soluble in organic solvents, but it is too nonpolar to dissolve in water. In the synthesis of viscose rayon, this insolubility is overcome. First cellulose is mixed with strong alkali solution and then allowed to react with carbon disulfide (Fig. 10-20). A xanthate derivative of cellulose is formed by a reaction exactly analogous to the reaction of base with carbon dioxide. This xanthate salt is ionic; therefore, cellulose xanthate dissolves in water. The thick viscous xanthate solution of cellulose is forced through tiny holes into a solution of sulfuric acid. Just as sodium bicarbonate, when treated with acid, regenerates carbon dioxide, so cellulose xanthate regenerates carbon disulfide and precipitates cellulose in the form of a continuous thread that is drawn off and dried. Viscose rayon is then chemically identical to ordinary cellulose, although the treatment with acid and base usually results in shortening the polymer chain.
